Promoting modal shift from freight to rail and river transport
As part of its mission to make supply chains smarter and more sustainable, DIAGMA is proud to join the APPEL D’AIR program, run by AI CARGO FOUNDATION. This non-profit organization is financed by government and private funds. Its aim is to improve transport chains through the adoption of new uses and the development of applications. The association relies on a data exchange platform and uses AI to support the ecological transition. AI CARGO FOUNDATION has a portal that provides access to various services, including those of the APPEL D’AIR program.
An ambitious modal shift program
The APPEL D’AIR program aims to raise awareness, support and involve transport and logistics professionals (shippers, forwarders, carriers, river and rail companies, publishers and local authorities) in the modal shift of freight transport by rail and river. Through its digital tool and advanced integration possibilities (e.g. API connection to the platform), this program has set itself the target of signing up 250 companies and digitally assisting the modal shift of 2 billion tons/km to save 1 TWh Cumac* by the end of 2025.
Three areas for optimizing flows to decarbonize transport
The aim of this program to decarbonize transport is threefold. APPEL D’AIR seeks to complement existing trains and barges to increase load factors and improve service rates through more frequent departures. Secondly, it finds counter-flows on existing services to optimize transport costs, as well as to pool risks and resources. Finally, the program identifies flows that can be massaged to create new services. The aim is to enable small and medium-sized shippers to benefit from modal shift and use less saturated corridors.
Testing flow eligibility
The APPEL D’AIR digital platform uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to test the eligibility of road haulage flows for modal shift to rail or river. For a road transport order submitted to it, it can search for the dates and departure times of the corresponding rail and river transports, by day, with a range of around plus or minus 3 days. Similarly, on the basis of a road flow file, it can search, for each movement, the dates and departure times of the corresponding rail and river transport, with a range of around 3 days, and display, line by line, the existing solutions. Simulations for a given flow enable you to estimate the percentage of movements eligible for modal shift to rail or river, the possible movement units (e.g. 45-foot swap bodies, 20- or 40-foot containers, etc.), the service providers likely to carry them out, the eligible weight in tons and the equivalent CO2 emissions saved.
Raising companies’ awareness of modal shift
“Our expert consultants will be able to raise companies’ awareness of the benefits of modal shift to rail or river transport, by offering them access to an innovative digital platform. In this way, we’ll be helping them to reduce their CO2 emissions, while cutting costs, by adopting more virtuous modes of transport. We’re delighted with this highly promising collaboration, which is fully in line with our commitment to helping our customers decarbonize their transport“, commented Léandre Boulez, Partner at DIAGMA.
