Michelin tracks 60% of its transport flows in real time<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Michelin<\/strong>, one of Transporeon\u2019s long-standing clients, decided to implement the Real Time Visibility solution. Aiming to better plan transport flows with its 200 FTL (Full Truck Load) partners, Michelin began testing the tracking solution as early as 2019.<\/p>\n

With all its flows managed via Transporeon\u2019s platform, Michelin achieved real-time tracking of 30% of flows by 2022<\/strong>, reaching 60% two years later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Cyril Faure<\/strong>, Network Capacity Analyst at Michelin, emphasizes the importance of investing in convincing carriers<\/strong> of the added value such solutions provide\u2014even for them. That\u2019s why assigning a project manager on both Michelin\u2019s and Transporeon\u2019s side proved crucial for managing technical and operational issues with transport partners.<\/p>\n

A 60% real-time tracking ceiling?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Challenges remain to reach 100% real-time tracking<\/strong>. Some carriers are still reluctant to provide full transparency to their clients. Smaller transporters\u2014especially subcontractors or those covering short distances\u2014often perceive the investment as too high and not directly beneficial to them.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, as Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Lanchais<\/strong>, Managing Director at Ascot, points out, some larger carriers may prefer using their own TMS (Transportation Management System)<\/strong> to collect and share fleet data with clients.<\/p>\n

This is why the industry often faces difficulties exceeding the 60% tracking threshold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The complexity of multimodal transport<\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to Olivier Harduin<\/strong>, real-time tracking becomes more complex in multimodal transport<\/strong> due to multiple handling units, diverse vehicle\/container types, and breakpoints in the chain.<\/p>\n

He highlights that most software platforms do not yet cover all transport modes<\/strong> (road, sea, air, rail, and inland waterways) or geographies. Therefore, it\u2019s essential to choose your solution based on your current and future flows<\/strong>, and consider expert support when making these decisions.<\/p>\n

Educating carriers is key<\/strong><\/h2>\n

How can you convince transporters? As Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Lanchais<\/strong> stresses, nothing is more counterproductive than receiving an impersonal client email mandating connection to a platform.<\/p>\n

Instead, educating<\/strong> transporters, explaining the rationale, engaging them in the process, and answering questions works far better. A collaborative approach between shipper and solution provider<\/strong> also helps overcome technical or psychological barriers.<\/p>\n

Jean-Christophe Huon<\/strong>, Logistics Director at Limagrain, suggests another incentive: asking carriers to update transport order statuses as a condition for invoicing.<\/p>\n

This way, automated tracking<\/strong> allows faster payments and reduces manual data entry. Another approach: include real-time tracking as a requirement during transport tenders<\/strong> and formalize it within contracts.<\/p>\n

The role of the freight forwarder, redefined<\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to Olivier Harduin<\/strong>, there\u2019s significant added value for carriers in improving the efficiency of transport operations. Gone are the noisy offices filled with 30 people spending their days answering customer calls about shipment statuses.<\/p>\n

Automated real-time tracking<\/strong> frees up freight forwarders to focus on real issues\u2014like truck accidents or containers held at customs. \u201cThis upskilling of the freight team helps to elevate the role internally,\u201d <\/span>adds the Senior Manager at Diagma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A more constructive dialogue with carriers<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Another benefit of real-time transport visibility solutions is the ability to access performance dashboards<\/strong>. \u201cThis enables shippers to engage with their carriers based on factual data and help them grow,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jean-Christophe Huon<\/strong> from <\/span>Limagrain<\/strong> adds that having robust <\/span>KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)<\/strong> allows shippers to evaluate carriers using reliable metrics. <\/span>This leads to <\/span>more constructive discussions<\/strong>\u2014for example, taking into account delays that are actually the shipper\u2019s responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

Successfully managing the transformation toward real-time transport tracking<\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to Olivier Harduin<\/strong>, given the ongoing and worsening driver shortage<\/strong>, carriers are increasingly able to choose the shippers they want to work with<\/strong>. In this context, the efficiency and quality of the relationship<\/strong> with the shipper significantly enhance their attractiveness.<\/p>\n

For him, transport digitization projects<\/strong> generate significant productivity gains. They improve performance<\/strong>\u2014in terms of cost, quality, and lead times\u2014through better flow control. Automation<\/strong> also allows teams to focus on higher-value tasks. Lastly, these projects contribute to reducing CO\u2082 emissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
